These are English black labs: huge, intelligent, sensitive and beloved. I fell in love with them as I painted them. They're grand beings.

Black Bear at Sunset

Black Bear at Sunset by Alison Vernon
30x40, palette knife oil

I donated this painting to raise money for a young boy in our hometown who has a rare brain cancer. I thought this painting would particularly appeal to his peers and their parents and could generate some much needed funds.

But isn't this crazy? On top of the 24/7 nightmare of dealing with her very sick young child and all the side effects of chemo and radiation, learning the complexities of administering IV nutrition and worrying about inevitable infection, this single mother is on the verge of becoming homeless. Our community is responding but there's an uncertainty to the generosity and the boy will require care for years. For government support, she must fill out stacks of papers which will take months to process and will yield insufficient funds at best. She has already been turned down for fuel assistance because she's not disabled, over 65 yrs or under 6 yrs. I think we can do better than this.

Wide Ocean

Wide Ocean by Alison Vernon
Tripych, two 24x12 and one 24x24, oil with palette knives
I love painting tripychs. Only certain paintings can handle the effect. I usually frame them in something very simple.

It is such a pleasure to paint animals. This Webster is a goofy, cheerful and yet highly sensitive cockapoo. Isn't he adorable?

This is a commission purchased by Gramma Harrington for her granddaughter (the one in diapers) who will be celebrating her 21st birthday. That's her dad holding her hand. They're walking on a dock in Florida at sunset. The painting is based on a favorite photo.

Bryant Boys

Bryant Boys by Alison Vernon
20x30, palette knife oil
commission
Commissions are awesome because it's a sold painting from the start, it's a challenge for me to paint and if I do it well, it's a delight to the recipient. Win:win.

Purple Loosestrife Along the Sugar River

Purple Loosestrife Along the Sugar River by Alison Vernon
24x30, palette knife oil
I can't seem to get over the passing of summer. I know it's because last winter was so brutal and I am full of trepidation just thinking all those months of white ahead. Either I must move or I must find delight and joy in thick frozen blankets of snow. I think I've got to move.

There's a tree below our deck that is turning orange and red. The air has a feeling of transition. It happens like this in mid-August here in NH. Autumn begins to peek around the corner. Soon, children with bright backpacks will line up to get on school buses, mums and pumpkins will settle on porch steps, and my garden will finally surrender to chaos.

Lupine

Lupine by Alison Vernon
24x24, palette knife oil
When the world's news is so crazy and complicated, I find that paintings of a quiet simple moment bring calm and relief. I'm not a complicated person; I love to laugh, I work hard, and I love my homelife. These paintings flow naturally from me.

Wedding Bouquet

Wedding Bouquet by Alison Vernon
12x9, palette knife oil
I'm such a romantic. I've started an enterprise where I paint the bride's wedding bouquet. People buy these as a wedding gift but lately I've sold more to men who are buying them as an anniversary gift for their wives. All I need is a photo of the bouquet. I frame them in large elegant frames. $125 for 10x8, $150 for 12x9. It's amazingly popular.

I just spent the last week at two crafts festivals. To be juried into these festivals, these artists must be at the pinnacle of their careers. There is nothing visibly remarkable about these people, no indication that they are stellar crafts people. But the beauty of their work is breathtaking: furniture, quilts, jewelry, ceramics, and more. Some of these pieces took a lifetime to perfect and are so unusual.

Three Apple Trees

Three Apple Trees by Alison Vernon
15x30, palette knife oil
It's been raining here in New Hampshire for...well...the summer. I think we may have had eight days of sun so far. I enjoy a rainy day but I really enjoy a sunny day. I'm going to paint today.
