Proctor Sanctuary

Proctor Sanctuary by Alison Vernon

30x15, oil

I participated in an art show of all the Audubon bird refuges and sanctuaries in New Hampshire. I was a bit late on the draw so by the time I went out to choose which I wanted to paint, they had all been taken except for this large woodlot with a trail running through it. It was so homely, even the birds avoided it. Suddenly the sun broke through and bang, there was my painting.

Shell Seeker

Shell Seeker by Alison Vernon

One of my objectives when I paint is to capture the familiar, a scene or a moment that we all know but had forgotten. Like collecting shells on the beach...

We all seem to live frenetic lives. I like to paint paintings that give us a sense of peace; paintings that slow us down a bit.

The Luna moth is so pretty. It's rare to see one but what a pleasure when I do. This moth exemplifies the complexities of nature, blending amazing beauty with purpose. Just lovely.

Garden Path

Garden Path by Alison Vernon

As an artist, surrounding my home with lovely gardens is a requirement to my happiness. But creating these lovely gardens is as much fun for me as getting my teeth cleaned. I'd so much rather paint flowers than to plant them.

Tiger Swallowtail on Lilac

Tiger Swallowtail on Lilac by Alison Vernon
24x24, oil

The lilacs are glorious this year. Their fragrance wafts through the screen porch. Nice! This photo is much more blue than the actual painting.

Yick! Our puppy just ran by with a dead garter snake dangling from the corner of his mouth. See ya.

Birds on a Wire

Birds on a Wire by Alison Vernon
6x12, oil
www.alisonvernon.com

My husband is an avid birdwatcher. This has been great for me because we are always going to new places: woods, beaches, lakes, mountains and valleys, looking for beautiful winged creatures. This is a very symbiotic passtime for an artist. These are the birds that frequent our birdfeeders. When the hummingbirds fledge their nests we're swarmed by tiny young maniacs all with their new drivers licenses.

Sheep in Deep Thought

Sheep in Deep Thought by Alison Vernon
30x24, oil

We raised sheep for awhile and I have never witnessed one in deep thought. In fact, this particular painting shows a dimness in the eyes that I think is characteristic. Our son, Jeremiah, works on a farm and they recently came through lambing season. The ewes would go through labor and delivery, turn around to see their babe deposited on the ground and say, "Hey, what is that?" then walk away. This behavior must come from generations of dumb sheep permitted to procreate in safety of domestication. And I suppose dumb sheep are just as tasty as smart ones. Well, this is my deep thought for the day.

Doggie Daycare at Dogstar Canine

Doggie Daycare at Dogstar Canine
30x24, oil
Dogs are one of the greatest joys in my life. When our dear cockapoo, Moses, died hundreds of people shared their dog stories with me. I learned so much about the special relationship we share with our pups.
This is a painting of a playschool in Springfield, NH for dogs and they LOVE it.
Aren't dogs wonderful?

Old Man

Old Man by Alison Vernon

16x12, oil

The Old Man in the Mountain was a symbol of New Hampshire. Years of high skilled volunteer effort kept gravity at bay. Rocks were cabled to other rocks, concrete and glue were used where cables could not reach. The Old Man fell several years ago. But we still get pleasure from his image.

Surf Fishing

I try to make my paintings capture a moment, almost always a peaceful meditative moment. I long to have the viewer hear the painting...the soft crash of waves, gulls crying... I would love to include an audio clip with each painting.Wouldn't that be cool?
